Hipparcos parallaxes for η Boo and κ2 Boo: two successes for asteroseismology

The release of the Hipparcos catalogue (Perryman et al. 1997) provides an opportunity to check results from asteroseismology. This has already been done for the double-mode δ Scuti star SX Phe: Høg & Petersen (1997) found excellent agreement with the parallax derived from model calculations by Petersen & Christensen-Dalsgaard (1996). Here we show that Hipparcos parallaxes for two other stars are also in good agreement with oscillation results.

We review recent progress in observations of ground-based oscillations. Excellent observations now exist for a few stars (α Cen A and B, μ Ara), while there is some controversy over others (Procyon, η Boo). We have reached the stage where singlesite observations are of limited value and where careful planning is needed to ensure the future of asteroseismology.

Using VLTI/VINCI angular diameter measurements, we constrain the evolutionary status of three asteroseismic targets: the stars δ Eri, ξ Hya, η Boo. Our predictions of the mean large frequency spacing of these stars are in agreement with published observational estimations. Looking without success for a companion of δ Eri we doubt on its classification as an RS CVn star.
